UK girl, 18, has had three hearts

An 18-year-old British girl has had no fewer than three hearts -- the one she was born with and the other two transplanted hearts, media reported Monday.

Leanne Nicholson, a medical miracle, and lucky to be alive, is recovering at her home in Choppington, in Northumberland, from her second heart transplant three months ago.

Until the age of 12, Leanne was a normal and healthy child. But in April 2002 a virus -- unnamed and unknown -- swept through her body, attacking the muscle tissue of her heart.

She was diagnosed with severe cardiomyopathy, literally "heart muscle disease."

Her heart was so damaged by the virus that the doctors said it was as though she'd suffered three major heart attacks.

The first transplanted heart came from a young woman who had died of a head injury. And the transplant was, to everyone's huge relief, a success in 2002.

But after just 14 months, Leanne went into chronic rejection. Her body began to recognize the heart as an alien tissue and started to attack it so powerfully that even the strongest immuno-suppressive drugs did not work.

Surgeons attempted to fit Leanne with a pacemaker to regulate her heartbeat and help it keep a regular rhythm. But the operation was not a success because the heart was so weak, so in 2003 Leanne was once again rushed to intensive care with heart failure.

"To receive a second heart transplant is a million-to-one chance as there is such a shortage of donor organs," says Leanne.

In January this year, shortly after she spent her 18th birthday, Leanne again went into complete heart failure.

Her parents were told that a transplant was the only option. Without it she had at best just 30 days to live.

Doctors told them to say goodbye to Leanne, who by then was on life support, unconscious and with pipes, drains and wires all over her.

She was lucky enough that after three days of fighting for life, a heart was found, from a 35-year-old man from London who had died in a car accident.

Leanne is now making a steady recovery and said she had not felt so well in years.

The average survival rate for heart transplant patients is ten years, with many living for 20 years or more, and so her future is looking brighter than it has for a very long time.

BEIJING, May 11 -- It's a happy Mother's Day for an Arkansas woman -- she's pregnant with her 18th child. Michelle Duggar, 41, is due on New Year's Day, and the latest addition will join seven sisters and 10 brothers. There are two sets of twins.

"We've had three in January, three in December. Those two months are a busy time for us," she said, laughing.

The Duggars' oldest child, Josh, is 20, and the youngest, Jennifer, is nine months old.

The fast-growing family lives in Tontitown in northwest Arkansas in a 7,000-square-foot home. All the children -- whose names start with the letter J -- are home-schooled.

Duggar has been been pregnant for more than 11 years of her life, and the family is in the process of filming another series for "Discovery Health."

The new show looks at life inside the Duggar home, where chores -- or "jurisdictions" -- are assigned to each child. One episode of the new show involves a "jurisdiction swap," where the boys do chores traditionally assigned to the girls, and vice versa, Duggar said.

"The girls swapped jurisdictions, changing tires, working in the garages, mowing the grass," she said. "The boys got to cook supper from start to finish, clean the bathrooms," among other chores.

Duggar said she's six weeks along and the pregnancy is going well. She and her husband, Jim Bob Duggar, said they'll keep having children as long as God wills it.

"The success in a family is first off, a love for God, and secondly, treating each other like you want to be treated," Jim Bob Duggar said. "Our goal is for each one of our children to be best friends, and everybody working together to serve each other makes that happen."

The other Duggar children, in between Joshua and Jennifer, are Jana, 18; John-David, 18; Jill, 16; Jessa, 15; Jinger, 14; Joseph, 13; Josiah, 11; Joy-Anna, 10; Jeremiah, 9; Jedidiah, 9; Jason, 7; James, 6; Justin, 5; Jackson, 3; and Johannah, 2.

Pope: Sex can become 'like a drug'

VATICAN CITY, Italy (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged Saturday that the Vatican's teaching against birth control was difficult as he praised a 1968 Church document that condemned contraception.Pope Benedict expressed concern that human life risks losing its value in today's culture.

In a speech marking the 40th anniversary of the document, Benedict reiterated the Church's ban against artificial birth control as well as more recent teaching against using artificial procreation methods.

Pope Paul VI's 1968 "Humanae vitae" ("On Human Life") encyclical prohibits Catholics from using artificial birth control.

"The teaching laid out in the 'Humanae vitae' encyclical isn't easy," Benedict said.

"What was true yesterday remains true even today. The truth expressed in 'Humanae vitae' doesn't change; on the contrary, in the light of new scientific discoveries, it is ever more up to date," the pope added.

Benedict appeared to be referring to artificial procreation methods, which in the Church's view offend the dignity of life and go against Vatican teaching that the only way to conceive a child is through intercourse between husband and wife

"No mechanical technique can substitute the act of love that two married people exchange as a sign of a greater mystery," Benedict said.

Benedict expressed concern that human life risks losing its value in today's culture and worried that sex could "transform itself into a drug" that one partner had to have even against the will of the other.

"What must be defended is not only the true concept of life but above all the dignity of the very person," the pope added.

Paul VI was said to have agonized over whether to allow artificial conception in preparing the encyclical. Benedict described Paul's decision as the fruit of much suffering and the document as "a significant gesture of courage."

"Forty years after its publication, that teaching not only shows itself to be unchanged in its truth, but it reveals the farsightedness with which the problem was tackled," the pope said.

Myanmar welcomes int'l assistance for cyclone victims

JAKARTA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar government has made it clear that it welcomes other countries' efforts to extend humanitarian assistance for the victims of Cyclone Nargis which hit the country last week, an Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman said.

Myanmar's attitude was expressed by its foreign minister, U Nyan Win, to his Indonesian counterpart, Hassan Wirajudha, by telephone, Antara news agency quoted the ministry's spokesman, Kristiarto Soeryo Legowo, as saying on Friday.

At least 22,500 people were killed and 41,000 others went missing when Cyclone Nagris swept through Myanmar recently.

Legowo said some countries had asked Indonesia to sound out the Myanmar administration on whether it was willing to accept international assistance.

He said the two foreign ministers in their telephone conversation did not discuss conditions foreign countries or international organizations had to meet to provide relief aid for the disaster victims. The Myanmar foreign minister had only said that given the extent of the damage and the huge number of fatalities the cyclone had caused, the Myanmar government would welcome international humanitarian assistance.

Indonesia has sent relief aid in kind and one million U.S. dollars in funds to Myanmar to help the victims of Cyclone Nargis.

Earlier, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that the cyclone in Myanmar had destroyed the homes of one million people.

Myanmar: Death toll more than 15,000

YANGON, Myanmar (CNN) -- The death toll from the Myanmar cyclone is more than 15,000 people, Myanmar's government has said, with at least 10,000 killed in the township of Bogalay alone, according to the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua.
Survivors were facing their third night without electricity in the aftermath of the historic cyclone that also clogged roads with thousands of downed trees.

Diplomats were summoned to a government briefing Monday as the reclusive southeast Asian country's ruling military junta issued a rare appeal for international assistance in the face of an escalating humanitarian crisis.

A state of emergency was declared across much of the country following the 10-hour storm that left swathes of destruction in its wake.

The death toll of more than 15,000, official sources told Xinhua, makes the weekend cyclone the deadliest natural disaster to hit Myanmar in recent history, according to figures compiled by a U.N.-funded disaster database.

The toll eclipses that from a 1926 wind storm that killed about 2,700 people in the country, according to the database.

The assessment is bleak, Kyi Minn of the international aid group World Vision told CNN Tuesday.

"It could be worse than (the) tsunami," Minn said, comparing the cyclone's impact on Myanmar to the damage caused there following the tsunami that struck the region in late 20That tsunami was triggered by a a massive earthquake off the coast of Indonesia. It killed more than 150,000 across the region.

Minn said clean drinking water, food, medicine and shelter are all at a premium in southern Myanmar.

The government of neighboring Thailand said Myanmar's leaders had already requested food, medical supplies and construction equipment, AP reported. The first plane-load of supplies was due to arrive Tuesday, a Thai spokesman said.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement he was "deeply saddened by the loss of life and the destruction suffered by the people of Myanmar" and pledged to mobilize international aid and assistance as needed.

A United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination team is on stand-by to assist the government in responding to humanitarian needs if required, the statement said.

Scenes of the destruction showed extensive flooding, boats on their sides in Yangon harbor, roofs ripped off buildings, uprooted trees and downed power lines after cyclone Nargis battered the Irrawaddy delta with 150 mile (240 km/h) an hour winds throughout Friday night and Saturday morning, dumping 20 inches of rain. Residents of Yangon trudged through knee-deep swirling brown waters Monday as the delta city remained mostly without electricity and phone connections.

The U.S. Embassy in Myanmar has issued a "disaster declaration" in the country and authorized the release of $250,000 for cyclone relief efforts, Deputy State Department spokesman Tom Casey said Monday.

A disaster relief team is standing by, Casey said, but the Myanmar government had not given permission for the team to enter the country.

U.S. first lady Laura Bush blasted the military government, saying the lack of warning before the deadly cyclone hit was the latest example of "the junta's failure to meet its people's basic needs."

Hakan Tongkul, with the United Nation's World Food Programme, said residents in Yangon needed urgent assistance. "This has pushed people to the edge. All that they have has been blown away." Video Watch the cyclone hammer Yangon »

Michael Annear, regional disaster manger for the Red Cross, said the group was helping provide safe drinking water.

Relief agencies met at the United Nations' Bangkok headquarters Monday to coordinate their response to the disaster. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said it had released 200,000 Swiss Francs (about $190,000) to help with the aftermath.

A state of emergency was declared Sunday across five regions: the city of Yangon, Irrawaddy, Pegu and the states of Karen and Mon. All flights to Yangon, the former capital, were canceled.

"Most Burmese with whom we've been in touch report they lost their roofs, although so far everyone we have been able to contact reports that they and their families are safe," said a Yangon-based diplomat who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. Most telephone and cell phone service was down in Yangon, a city of about 6.5 million people, according to Dan Rivers, a CNN correspondent in the country.

In some places, the price of fuel had quadrupled to $10 a gallon. Even with that price lines for gas stretched around the block and some sought to buy gas on the black market.

The main water supply has been cut in many areas and power lines are down, Rivers reported.

Earlier Monday, an editor for an independent Myanmar newspaper based in Thailand told CNN that people in the Southeast Asian nation were angry over the response to the disaster by the ruling military junta.

"People are very angry with the slow response coming from the military government," said Aung Zaw of Irrawaddy news magazine. Video Listen to Irrawaddy journalist discuss the situation in Myanmar »

Khin Maung Win, a spokesman for the Democratic Voice of Burma -- a broadcast media group run by opposition expatriates -- said the whole of the delta region had been affected and entire villages had disappeared.

Pictures from inside the country showed a cyclone-ravaged region with tin huts crushed under trees. Bicyclists navigated around large branches that littered the deserted roads.

A man with his pant legs rolled up waded through knee-deep water and strained to clear massive limbs that were blocking the entrance to a house.

Despite widespread damage, Myanmar's junta plans to proceed with a referendum on the country's constitution on May 10 -- the fourth step of a "seven-step road map to democracy" -- according to state-run media reports. Learn more about Myanmar »

A critic of Myanmar's government said the referendum must be postponed. "They would be very stupid to go ahead with it," said Khin Maung Win with Democratic Voice of Burma, a broadcast media group run by opposition expatriates. "Thousands of people are dying or missing. It is very difficult to get around or get food and water. How can people vote?"

Myanmar, formerly called Burma, last held multi-party elections in 1990, when Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy handily won. The military junta ignored the results. YANGON, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Some people in Myanmar's biggest city of Yangon were busy with cutting and clearing fallen trees Saturday afternoon in the wake of a midnight-to-noon violent and deadly cyclone storm Nargis, which Yangon residents have never experienced in the past six decades.

Taking the interval that the cyclone stopped on Saturday afternoon, housewives were also seen rushing for food after they were trapped for over 10 hours at home without food from Friday midnight when the Nargis, which occurred on the Bay of Bengal, stormed the under-developed old capital.

The terrible cyclone, at a wind speed of about 192 kilometers per hour, has almost totally devastated the former capital.

Major infrastructures related to municipality, telecommunications, transport, electric power and water supply as well as private apartment buildings were hard hit by the severe cyclone.

Observers here estimate that it needs years of endeavors to rebuild the city.

On Friday midnight, the Nargis started to emerge amid warning. As the storm wind became stronger, people woke up to witness the onslaught of the cyclone all night. With wind blowing sound turning louder, many zinc roofs atop various buildings were torn off one after another, falling on streets amid the heavy rain.

Windows were crushed, satellite dishes were stricken to deformation, dropping from atop.

Almost all giant commercial advertisement signboards were even blown to pieces scattering on the streets.

Unable to withstand the strong wind, many big and old-aged trees on the streets, gardens and private residences fell one after another, turning Yangon into a forest city overnight.

The storm also cut off electricity in the city.

Buses stopped running and all flight and train schedules were suspended.

The Nargis has lashed coastal regions of the country's southwestern Ayeyawaddy division since Friday morning, covering Haing Gyi Island, Pathein, Myaungmya, Laputta, Mawlamyinegyun, Kyaiklat, Phyarpon and Bogalay.

The State Radio confirmed in a night broadcast that some of these areas were almost totally destroyed.

Up to five vessels capsized in the Yangon Port, and an investigation is underway for casualties and loss.

Meanwhile, Myanmar declared three divisions Yangon, Bago and Ayeyawaddy and two states Kayin and Mon as natural-disaster-hit regions.

A national central committee for prevention of natural disaster was also formed with Prime Minister General Thein Sein as Chairman to promptly and effectively carry out relief and resettlement tasks.

British man changes sex, remarries wife

Emma Martin, who had a sex change, remarried his wife of 30 years after they tied the knot as man and wife, media reported Sunday.

The former Martin Packer and Linda Packer remarried in a civil ceremony to preserve the tax and pension rights they enjoyed as a married couple.

The couple from Little Downham, near Ely in Cambridgeshire, first married in 1977 and never had children.

The now 60-year-old IT consultant has had a problem with his gender since he was four. In 1998, he told his wife he wanted to change his sex.

Subsequently, around 20,000 pounds of treatments including electrolysis and hormone therapy were followed by gender reassignment surgery.

Under the Gender Recognition Act 2004, marriages in which one spouse has a sex change are not permitted to continue.

Consequently, they annulled their marriage so Emma would be legally recognized as a woman, but lost the same tax rights as married couples or those in civil partnerships.

It left the pair facing large inheritance tax bills should one of them die and it also caused problems with life insurance and pensions rights.

So the "soulmates and best friends" decided to get remarried.

Calling Linda her soulmate, Emma explained "the simplest thing would have been if we could have had a transfer from a marriage to a civil partnership but that wasn't possible and it was such a farce to get all the paperwork sorted out.

The couple spoke out one year after their remarriage after Joyce and Sybil Burden, aged 90 and 82, lost their inheritance tax battle in the European Court of Human Rights.

The two sisters have lived together in Wiltshire all their lives and tried to get the same tax rights as married couples and civil partners.

U.S. envoy: Myanmar deaths may top 100,000

A senior U.S. diplomat in Myanmar said the death toll in cyclone Nargis that swept Myanmar's five divisions and states may exceed 100,000, according to media reports Thursday.
"The information we are receiving indicates over 100,000 deaths," said Shari Villarosa, the U.S. charge d'affaires in Yangon, "I think most of the damage was caused by these 12-foot storm surges."
The death toll is about 23,000 according to the Myanmar state radio by Wednesday night, and the number of missing has risen to 42,119. But Villarosa said 70,000 people are missing in the Irrawaddy Delta, which has a population of nearly 6 million people.
Villarosa said the U.S. figure is based on data from an international non-governmental organization, without naming the group.
"I can only assume that the longer the delay, the more victims that are created," she said.

Mother poisons 2 babies, commits suicide for dowry

A young Bangladeshi mother and her 45-day-old daughter died while her another minor daughter fell sick, as she took poison herself after feeding it to them, the leading newspaper The Independent reported Saturday.
The daily quoted the family members of the suicider Champa Begum as saying the reason behind the tragedy is dowry.
According to the family members, Champa married Nurul Islam eight years ago. Since then, Nurul had been torturing her, demanding dowry from Champa's father.
On Thursday evening, after being severely beaten up, Champa first fed her two little children pesticide and then she took it herself.
Demanding dowry from the bride's family is still very common in some rural areas in Bangladesh. Many wives are tortured even killed by husbands for not paying dowry in these areas.

Austria: girl raped, locked for 24 years by father

Austrian police on Sunday arrested a 73-year-old man accused of imprisoning his daughter in a windowless basement for 24 years, abusing her and fathering seven children with her, according to local police Monday.
The woman, identified as 42-year-old Elisabeth Fritzl, told investigators her father, Josef, put her to sleep with an anaesthetic on August 28, 1984, handcuffing her in a locked basement.
Officially, she was declared a missing person, with Interpol opening an investigation.
Elisabeth Fritzl told detectives she was "regularly abused" by her father. Elisabeth gave birth to seven children during her ordeal.
Josef's wife Rosemarie had been unaware of what happened to her daughter and it was assumed Elisabeth had disappeared voluntarily when her parents received a letter from her saying they should not search for her.
Miss F told police that she gave birth to twins in 1996, but one died days later because it was not properly cared for. Police said her father took the corpse and burned it.
Three of the younger children were brought up by Josef and his wife after they were left at the building, the first child accompanied by a note from Elisabeth saying she was unable to care for the baby herself.
Three others, including the two eldest aged 18 and 19, and the youngest, aged 5, had been locked up in the basement with their mother since birth.
The case only came to light when the oldest child became seriously ill and was taken to hospital in Amstetten. Josef said that child had also been left unconscious on his doorstep, according to media reports.
Authorities in Amstetten, 130 km (80 miles) west of Vienna, were still piecing together details of the case.
"We are faced with a crime that is incomprehensible," Interior Minister Guenther Platter said on Austrian television. "Everything that has happened here goes beyond one's imagination".
Rosemarie, as well as Elisabeth and her children were receiving psychological counselling. DNA samples of all those involved were taken and would be analysed, police said.

Potassium-rich foods may help woman have boy

A research shows that having a hearty appetite, eating potassium-rich foods including bananas, and not skipping breakfast all seem to raise the odds of having a boy, media reported Friday.
The British research is billed as the first in humans to show a link between a woman's diet and whether she has a boy or girl.
University of Exeter researcher Fiona Mathews, the study's lead author, said the findings also fit with fertility research showing that male embryos aren't likely to survive in lab cultures with low sugar levels. Skipping meals can result in low blood sugar levels.
The research involved about 700 first-time pregnant women in the United Kingdom who didn't know the sex of their fetuses. They were asked about their eating habits in the year before getting pregnant.
Among women with the highest calorie intake before pregnancy (but still within a normal, healthy range), 56 percent had boys, versus 45 percent of the women with the lowest calorie intake.
Women who ate at least one bowl of breakfast cereal daily were 87 percent more likely to have boys than those who ate no more than one bowlful per week. Cereal is a typical breakfast in Britain and in the study, eating very little cereal was considered a possible sign of skipping breakfast, Mathews said.
Compared with the women who had girls, those who had boys ate an additional 300 milligrams of potassium daily on average, "which links quite nicely with the old wives' tale that if you eat bananas you'll have a boy," Mathews said.

Congo cops arrest 13 alleged penis thieves

In an effort to avoid possible bloodshed, Congo police have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to shrink or steal men's penises.
The arrests came after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings prompted by the alleged witchcraft. A decade ago in Ghana, 12 suspected penis snatchers were beaten to death by angry mobs.
"You just have to be accused of that, and people come after you. We've had a number of attempted lynchings. ... You see them covered in marks after being beaten," Kinshasa's police chief, Jean-Dieudonne Oleko, told Reuters on Tuesday.
Stories of so-called penis pilfering are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur.
Rumors of penis theft began circulating last week in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo's sprawling capital of some 8 million inhabitants. They quickly dominated radio call-in shows, with listeners advised to beware of fellow passengers in communal taxis wearing gold rings.
Purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.
"I'm tempted to say it's one huge joke," Oleko said. "But when you try to tell the victims that their penises are still there, they tell you that it's become tiny or that they've become impotent. To that I tell them, 'How do you know if you haven't gone home and tried it?'"

Prosecutors: Wesley Snipes deserves 3 years in jail
BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhuanet) -- "Blade" star Wesley Snipes should serve a maximum three-years prison term and be fined 5 million U.S. dollars over tax evasion charges, U.S. prosecutors said.
In court papers filed on Monday but made public Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Robert O'Neill said Snipes deserved the harshest sentence due to years of "brazen defiance" and "insidious concealment." Full story
